He visited each of these shrines, revitalised the temples, installed the principal deities, and created the tradition of the Rawal priests (from Kerala) who conduct the Badrinath puja to this day. His samadhi (final resting place) is at Kedarnath, completing the circle of a life entirely given to the divine.

Completing the Char Dham Yatra is believed to dissolve the karmic burden of many lifetimes — granting what the Puranas call moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). The traditional sequence — Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath — follows the sun's eastward movement and is considered the most auspicious order. Shastrically, it represents an inner journey: from earth (Yamunotri's water element) through fire (Gangotri's transformative energy) to space (Kedarnath's emptying) and finally light (Badrinath's illumination).

• May–June: Peak season — all temples open, wildflowers in bloom, energetic pilgrim spirit. Book accommodation and taxis well in advance.
• July–August: Monsoon — heavy rains, landslide risk, some routes temporarily blocked. Not recommended for first-timers.
• September–October: Best season — post-monsoon clarity, dramatic cloud formations, peak mountain visibility, manageable crowds. Our top recommendation.

Char Dham Registration 2025

The Uttarakhand Char Dham Devasthanam Management Board requires all pilgrims to register before visiting any shrine. Registration is done online at the official portal and is free of charge. You receive a biometric registration number that is checked at multiple points. Keep a printed copy and digital screenshot.

Physical Preparation Checklist

• Start daily walks (30–60 min) 6–8 weeks before departure.
• Consult a doctor regarding altitude sickness medication (diamox) if you have any cardiovascular conditions.
